Chelsea plot ANOTHER Bundesliga raid as they prepare bid for £75m-rated Leverkusen star Kai Havert

Chelsea will attempt another raid on the Bundesliga with a move for Bayer Leverkusen starlet Kai Havertz.

Expected to seal the £53m transfer of RB Leipzig centre forward Timo Werner when the transfer window opens, Chelsea also want a young wide player to replace the outgoing Brazilian Willian and Spaniard Pedro.

It is understood that 20-year-old Havertz is the player they want, even though they will face fierce competition from other top European clubs.

Havertz has scored five times in four games since the resumption of the Bundesliga and is on the radar of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

Chelsea will have to spend heavily to win the race, with Havertz’s market value sitting north of £75m and the player under contract until 2022. They have already spent £38m on attacking midfielder Hakim Ziyech of Ajax.

But the London club are determined to claw back ground on their rivals they feel they lost while under transfer embargo last summer.

Havertz has been in the Leverkusen first team since he was 17 and has seven caps for Germany. He has been influential this season but was left out of the squad that lost 4-2 at home to Bayern at the weekend.

Bayer’s sporting director Simon Rolfes said: ‘We don’t know yet what will happen to Kai.

‘We know that all the great clubs from Germany and Europe are after him and that he has the ability to play anywhere.’

Chelsea are prepared to shelve plans to recruit a new goalkeeper this summer, despite assessing a number of potential candidates after a dip in form led to doubts about Kepa Arrizabalaga’s long-term future.

Frank Lampard’s side will only move on from the Spaniard if they can recoup at least the majority of the world-record £71.6m they spent to sign him two years ago. This seems unlikely given the short list of top clubs looking for a new No 1 this summer.

The Spaniard was left out for six successive games in January and February by Lampard following a loss of form but regained his manager’s trust to earn a recall for their two games before football’s suspension, keeping clean sheets in Chelsea’s wins against Liverpool and Everton.

One goalkeeper dreaming of a Premier League move and who has been linked with Chelsea is Andre Onana.

The Ajax goalkeeper wants to leave Amsterdam this summer and would be keen to join Ziyech at Stamford Bridge.

But the Cameroon international, who is valued around £27m and has two years left on his current deal, is prepared to stay at the Dutch giants for another season given the uncertainty of the post-Coronavirus transfer market.
