Arsenal press conference live: Mikel Arteta on Mesut Ozil absence, David Luiz and injury updates

The Gunners were back in action for the first time since March when the 2019/20 season was halted due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But any hopes Arteta and his side had of securing victory were damaged significantly by David Luiz's dreadful individual performance at the Etihad Stadium.

The Brazilian replaced the injured Pablo Mari midway through the first half but was caught napping right on the stroke of half-time to allow Raheem Sterling to score the opener and his - and the Gunners' - misery was compounded when he hauled down Riyad Mahrez in the second half to concede a penalty.

He was shown a straight red card and Kevin de Bruyne converted the penalty before Phil Foden added a late third goal to seal the Gunners' fate.

Arteta will be expected to discuss the future of Luiz, as well as Mesut Ozil- who was left out of the squad altogether for the journey north. He will also give an update on the injuries suffered by not just Mari, but also Granit Xhaka who was withdrawn early in the first half.
